Mid Century Revival

This mid-century modern home resides in an old 50’s tract home neighborhood surrounded by priceless San Luis Obispo hilltop vistas.

The clients had recognized the home’s hidden potential and hired JGSLA to restore the landscape back to its modern lines using a contemporary palette.  Renovation began by selecting a new house color to serve as a complementary backdrop for the newly conceived landscape.

By reducing the driveway’s foot print by 30 percent, we were able to create an invigorated entry experience with wavering steps up to the front door.

These entry steps were designed as a playful twist on the horizontal lines of the home.  Further playing on the house’s horizontal lines, the balcony was redesigned in a Brazilian hardwood with cable railing unifying the house to the Ipe wood screen near the street.

Three new patios were designed with individual planting identities that could also be enjoyed from the interior spaces of the home.  The first garden was designed with a California native planting, the second with an Asian planting palette and the third designed to encourage an aviary habitat for bird watching.
